Research

The museum's research work is one of the most important facets of the museum; it manifests in the study of the natural environment of Latvia, in the processing and development of collections, in the creation of new exhibitions, and in providing environmental education. The museum's specialists are involved in the implementation of both local and international projects, as well as in the provision of educational and communication programmes of international conventions.

The Entomological Collection

Of all of the museum’s collections, the entomological collection has the largest number of species represented and the largest number of specimens (of which there are more than 60,000). The collection contains both historical and contemporary collected material and represents several insect orders.

The Palaeontological Collection

The palaeontological collection consists of ancient animal and plant fossils from Latvia and surrounding territories. Among them are 430 million-year-old corral fossils and 160 million-year-old mollusc shells as well as the relatively recent bones of woolly mammoths and other Quaternary period animals. The most valuable part of the museum’s palaeontological collection is its diverse fish fossil collection from the Devonian period.

The Geological Collection

The geological collection consists of more than 43,000 units. Minerals, rocks and fossils have been collected since the museum’s beginnings and the work continues to the current day. Especially broad and diverse is the collection of the sedimentary rocks of Latvia. The museum’s geology interest group aided in the collecting of specimens for the unique mineral and rock collections from the South Caucasus and the Kola Peninsula. The Baltic amber collection is also consistently increasing in size.
