From May 20 to 23, the exhibition "Cacti 2026", organized in cooperation with the Latvian Society of Cacti and Other Succulents, will be on display at the Latvian National Museum of Natural History. Around 500 plants of different varieties will be exhibited.
This year’s special highlight is epiphyllums (Epiphyllum) and rhipsalis (Rhipsalis), which grow in the forests of Brazil in warm and humid conditions. The exhibition will also feature mammillarias, astrophytums and rebutias, the cactus of the year – schlumbergera, the succulent of the year – euphorbia, and many other exotic plants.
Cacti and other succulents are very popular houseplants as they are relatively easy to care for. Good lighting, day-to-night temperature variation, and cool, dry wintering conditions are important for these plants. The soil should contain small stones and clay pieces to provide the microelements necessary for cacti. For a cactus to bloom, it requires not only sunlight but also a period of cold temperatures. Succulents naturally possess self-protection against ultraviolet radiation.
The exhibition is also an opportunity to consult with specialists and obtain practical and useful information about the selection, purchase, cultivation, and repotting of cacti and other succulents. Alongside the splendor of these exotic plants, visitors will also be able to enjoythe photo exhibition “My Bird 2026”.
