The annual Mushroom exhibition organized by the Latvian Museum of Natural History will be open to public from September 13–17, 2017, and will present the diversity of Latvia’s wild fungi.

More than 4000 fungi species have been found in Latvia. Over 200 of those are edible, however, despite the strong mushrooming tradition, only around 20–30 species are well recognized, and mushrooming novices would collect only the most popular of those.

Visiting the Mushroom exhibition curated by the mycologists of the Museum is a great opportunity to discover the overwhelming mushroom diversity, learn the species and clarify fungi related questions. Fresh mushrooms will be brought in from Latvia’s wilderness every day during the show, thus the selection of species will change slightly throughout the week.

The mushroom of the year 2017 - Choiromyces meandriformis (White Pig Truffle) will also be presented (dried). Several findings of the species have been registered this summer in southeast and west of the country. This rare mushroom species is closely related to true truffle (Tuber) species.

The exhibition is organized in cooperation with the Latvian Mycological Society. The Museum mycologists Inita Dāniele, Diāna Meiere and Māra Eipure will provide consultations for visitors.

The Latvian Museum of Natural History reminds – unknown and unrecognized mushrooms should not be used as a food source!
