Environmental education
  The educational offerings of the Natural History Museum of Latvia are very thematically diverse.

  The museum offers pedagogic programs, lectures, guided excursions. In order to actively involve the public in environmental education and protection issues and activities, the museum organizes various events, many of which have become an anxiously awaited tradition – the traveling pedagogic program “The museum in our baggage”, the Christmas charity event, the Bird days events and Bat Days.

  The museum regularly organizes events for biology, geography and preschool teachers.

  The Natural History Museum of Latvian is instrumental in promoting and maintaining the principles of the Ramsare, Rio De Janeiro and Washington conventions. Of note are the annual World Wetland Days, Biological Diversity Days and the Washington (CITES) convention educational program, which explain the activities of these conventions in Latvia and the world. In collaboration with ASCOBANS (Agreement on the Conservation of Small Cetaceans of the Baltic and North Seas) secretariat, the museum has, since 2004, become involved in educating the public about protection of the harbor porpoise. In 2004 as well, the museum participated in the International Baltic Sea Harbor Porpoise Day for the first time ( http://www.ascobans.org  ).

  Since 2001 the Latvian Environmental Interpretation Service has been effectively working at the museum. Its main task is to organize a two-year program for environmental guides in Latvia, seminars and other events for specialists in environmental interpretation, to create and produce informative and educational materials.

  In 2005 the Natural History Museum of Latvia has started to make available a new service – the opportunity to celebrate your birthday at the museum.

  The program:
  A 45-60 minute long thematic journey through one of the museum exhibits with games, art and other activities; photographing and/or filming the event is permissible;
Gifts for the guests and a special gift for the birthday child;

 · Available themes: ‘Runcis Tuncis’ (How many big and small cats can you find in the museum exhibit? What do they know, what can they do and where do they live? Which one do you think is the most beautiful? This will especially appeal to those born in the year of the cat/tiger).
· Bird Days: (Birds of Latvia…the biggest, the smallest etc., their habits, their song, a special hero – the owl; making paper owls…)
·
The fluffy and the prickly (Meet the animals of Latvia! This is a hands-on activity).

Close out your celebration in our café on the lower level.
